What to Expect with SEO

Web Site Ranking and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Services

In order to maximize the benefits of your SEO strategy, and avoid misunderstandings and unrealistic expectations, you should know what you can expect—and what you can’t expect—from search engine marketing.

In the world of search engine optimization, more is involved in boosting your business’ name to the top of the search engines than simply creating a beautiful site. It takes time to develop search engine optimization that works, and you won’t see results overnight.

Don’t Expect a Quick Fix

Good SEO takes advantage of careful keyword research to determine what particular terms Internet users type into search engines to look for services like yours.

Your SEO team will optimize your website to help you rank high for those specific “key term phrases.”

However, don’t expect high rankings right away.

Search engines employ “spiders” who “crawl” websites, index them, and rank them based on how relevant the information is to Internet users’ needs. These spiders take their time crawling, and may not visit your site for months!

So, if you believe you should be ranking higher for a new key term phrase, be patient. The best things in life take time.

Don’t Expect a Guarantee

Some SEO companies promise they can get your website to the #1 spot in the search engine listings within a week.

While this sounds tempting, it isn’t based in science. SEO—though it can produce lucrative results for business websites—is not magic.

SEO companies don’t own the search engines. They can’t ask for favors. They have to rely on good old-fashioned hard work to boost your site to the top of the rankings.

And hard work takes time.

Web sites that utilize unethical practices to get to the top of the search engines can be removed from ranking consideration in the search engines. So, while you may obtain fast results, they will be fleeting results that end up causing harm to your business’ reputation with the search engines.

Expect Targeted Traffic

When reading about SEO, you may have seen SEO companies boasting that they will “drive loads of traffic towards your site!”

While this isn’t necessarily a bad claim, it could be better. Here’s why:

After optimization, you can expect more traffic entering your site. However, what good will all that traffic do you if those visitors aren’t interested in what you have to offer?

Shady SEO companies get their clients on top by driving traffic towards their clients’ sites via irrelevant key term phrases (i.e., do not relate to the product or service they are selling).

This has the effect of increasing your traffic statistics; however, does little to improve your conversions.

While they aren’t lying—they did bring your site more traffic—is that really the kind of traffic you want?

Expect high rankings for relevant key term phrases.

A good SEO company will put you on top with key term phrases that appeal to your niche market. While you may see less traffic via this approach, you should see increased sales and a higher ROI (which is what this whole Internet marketing thing is really all about 🙂 ).
