Really? Another Post about Facebook?

facebook and social media connecting millionsYep. But it’s not because we’re dull and repetitive. It’s because we care. It’s because Facebook is a vital part of any online marketing strategy. And besides, this one’s fun.

Billions and Billions…

Let’s look at the numbers.

There are roughly half a billion unique Facebook users. 250 million are logged in at some point on any given day. The PennySaver sure isn’t going to get you that kind of exposure.

Facebook users spend 700 billion minutes on Facebook each month. Trust me. You don’t even have the slightest hint of the enormity of that figure. Let’s say you were to count to 700 billion. Quickly. You can probably count to ten in about 2 seconds, so you can get to 100 in 20 seconds. Let’s say you did only this, never taking a break, until you got to 700 billion. How long would it take? Only about 4.43 million years.

To put it another way, if you are, say, 30 years old, and you counted at that rate for the rest of your expected life span (let’s just say 50 more years), you’d be .001128% of the way there when you died.

Granted, not everyone is going to spend all their time on Facebook looking at your page. But if you don’t even have one, no one is going to spend any time there.

Numbers Don’t Lie

A new survey by Webs says that 77% of small business owner plan to devote more time and money to social media as part of the marketing strategy in 2011 than they did in 2010. Interestingly, though, almost 60% said that social marketing doesn’t meet or only partially meets their expectations.

What does this tell us?

A lot of small business owners either aren’t devoting enough time or resources to social media, or they aren’t updating their pages enough, or they aren’t including the right kind of content. More than 36% who do use it only update or post new content once a week or less!  Although they clearly want to be, many business owners just aren’t using Facebook effectively.

You’re Not in It Alone

This is an area where, increasingly, a good SEO firm can help. Social media management is becoming a bigger and bigger part of what internet marketing firms do, and is already an integral part of an effective SEO campaign.

Search engines like Google are giving more weight to social media as well, with the number of fans, page comments, and mentions figuring more prominently into search engine algorithms. It is expected to only grow in this regard.

Hiring an SEO firm for social media management is a great way to increase your presence, especially if you don’t feel comfortable with or simply don’t have the time for Facebook yourself. But whether you do it on your own or hire a professional SEO company, one thing is clear: you can’t afford not to be on Facebook anymore, and you have to be on there in an effective way.
