How to Get Followers
Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to building a solid base of Twitter followers. As with Facebook marketing, the key is to provide valuable, informative, and entertaining content. One thing you do not want to do is to constantly tweet about your business or the services you provide. Twitter is not a place to advertise, it’s a place to connect. It’s ok to tweet about a special deal once in a while but do it judiciously.
Essentially, your goal is to become seen as a valuable source of information or entertainment—or preferably both. Your tweets should have enough variety to keep people interested; this will make it more likely for them to keep following you. Occasionally, you’ll get retweets, and each of those will probably gain you a few new followers—who you also want to keep. Over time, by providing a steady stream of informative and/or entertaining content, your base of followers will gradually grow.
It’s ok to be more active on Twitter than on Facebook. Anywhere from a half-dozen to 25 or 30 tweets a day is OK, as long as you are spacing them out—it can be annoying if you tweet ten times in half an hour. But don’t just tweet to tweet. Be sure you have something to say.
Twitter’s Also About Interaction
Another way to improve your Twitter presence and gain followers is to interact with already-prominent people in your field. By direct interaction with these influential people, you’ll come to be seen as another important player in your industry—and soon people will be wanting to interact with you.
One other factor to keep in mind: social media platforms such as Twitter are becoming increasingly visible to search engines. Being active on Twitter can be a boost to your search engine rankings, and thus drive even more traffic your way. And it’s likely that social signals will become ever more important to search engine optimization in the future.
